For Travel + Leisure’s ‘World’s Best Awards’ readers have crowned San Miguel de Allende in Mexico as the creme de la creme, calling the Mexican locale “an enchanting city with remarkable architecture” according to the publication.
The pedestrian friendly city, located in Mexico’s central highlands, had its 64-block historic center named a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its Spanish architecture, cobblestoned streets and neo-Gothic church.
Travel + Leisure readers also commented on the city’s inventive cuisine and San Miguel de Allende is home to 350 markets and restaurants full of unique and enticing gastronomic feasts. Shoppers will also love the El Tianguis de los Martes market held every Tuesday, which offers an array of baskets, pottery and embroidered clothing.
“This is one of the best cities in the world,” one Travel + Leisure reader gushed. “There are lots of local stores selling local artisan crafts, jewelry and art. Bring an extra suitcase!”
